Description

The Vintage Shirt Dress by Sew Over it is a professional, yet playful shirt dress that can be worn in and out of the workplace. This collared dress can be made with elbow length sleeves or as a sleeveless dress. Both versions have a front facing providing a clean finish and a solid structure for the buttonholes that get placed down the front of the garment. Waist pleats provide a flattering shape, and if you're sewing the sleeveless version you'll get more practice with using bias tape for the armscye finish.

Pair the sleeved version with a pair of classic pumps for a stylish garment fit for any season. The sleeveless version is great for a warmer day in the park or wear a v-neck sweater over the top with the collar sticking out on a cooler day.

Additional Notes

This paper sewing pattern includes all pattern pieces and step-by-step instructions with illustrations. Please note: the sizing listed in the tables above has been converted to US sizing. The sizing listed on the pattern packaging is in UK sizing.

Instructions were really simple and to the point. I usually bypass all the typical sew over it instructions, that refer to their particular preferences in construction and aren’t essential for the final product. Sew over it usually recommends zig-zagging or overlocking all pieces before sewing, yet I prefer to do this at the end and reduce seam bulk in one fell swoop. Sew over it patterns also don’t use topstitching, instead they prefer to understitch all pieces. But I do like a topstitch, so I skip on understitching and just topstitch the edges. I'd recommend the pattern to adventurous begginers to more advanced sewers, or having some expertise in garment sewing (collars are allways a bit tricky to master).

I loved this pattern and look forward to making several different creations using it! The dress is a flattering and has a classic retro flair. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, the pattern was easy to understand assemble, and the markings were all very helpful and precise. I would not recommend this pattern to a beginner because of the many pieces, and wish it came in smaller sizing. I used the smallest which was a sz 8 and had to take it in a little on the waist. I found it to be such a great silhouette and am extremely pleased with the outcome.
