New Indiesew Designer: Dog Under My Desk
Ah, the zippered pouch. Such a satisfying sew. A great handmade gift. An item you’ll use over and over. Totally functional. My favorite Christmas gift to date is the zippered make up bag my sister sewed up nearly five years ago. It still warms my heart every single time I use it.
In fact, it’s no wonder sewing studios everywhere offer the zippered pouch as a great introductory class to sewing. After you’ve mastered Sewing 101, the zippered pouch is a great next step into the world of sewing. With zippered pouches there's no need to worry about the fit of a garment. And the geometric-shaped pieces are quick and easy to cut out and assemble.
We’re lucky enough to feature patterns created by a designer I would consider the ultimate expert in zippered pouches. Erin from Dog Under My Desk is the queen of interfacing, zippers and inner pockets. She’s channeled her analytical nature into creating the most detailed PDF patterns we’ve ever seen. She calls them “excessively detailed”, in fact, and we wouldn’t disagree with her. There is no step in these patterns that goes undocumented or photographed.
We’re featuring two of Erin’s patterns in our shop right now! Both of these are great patterns for beginner sewists.
The Essential Wristlet is a mid-sized wristlet great for a night out on the town. This zippered pouch pattern gives you four different wristlet variations to choose from (two rectangular wristlet sizes, two boxed corner sizes and two pocket sizes). The sturdy strap connects to the wristlet using a lobster clasp.
What fits inside the small boxed corner version? Well, the essentials. A cell phone, passport, some lip gloss and a few credit cards will fit inside with space to spare.
You can also sew up this pattern in a small rectangular size. The outer, zippered pocket on this version is great for keeping change separate and contained. (Yes, we went there. With bubble quote fabric, how could you not?)
The finished sizes of the Essential Wristlet are below:
Finished size: 7.75” wide x 5” tall with your choice of passport/phone pocket or card pocket
Finished size: 6.75” wide x 4.5” tall with card pocket
Boxed corner sizes:
Finished size: 7.75″ wide x 5″ tall x 1.5″ deep
Finished size: 8.25″ wide by 5.5″ tall by 2″ deep
The Make Me Up Before You Go-Go make up case is a quilted, bias-bound pouch big enough to fit all of your essential travel items. This pouch features three inside pockets (one zippered and two non-zippered). The case also includes a zipper tab and loop for easy opening and closing.
What fits inside? Everything, seriously. Maybe not your full size bottles of shampoo and conditioner, but, really, this case is a big one. We love that. Everything you need for your morning routine will fit inside this puppy.
The finished dimensions of the Make Me Up Before You Go-Go make up case are:
6” tall x 10” wide x 3” deep.
If you haven’t tried your hand at zippered pouches, because you just love garment sewing that much, we understand. But try your hand at a zippered pouch, and I’m willing to bet it will satisfy that sewing craving just as much (if not more) than sewing up your favorite tank top pattern. We've got a great blog post on How To Use Fusible Interfacing that will help you get started.
So, I’d love to know. What’s your favorite zippered pouch pattern? Let me know in the comments below! Don’t forget to follow our Pinterest boards for new sewing inspiration pins added daily!
