Indiesew | Top 10 Bestselling Indie Sewing Patterns

Whew. 2016, you took us for a ride. For Indiesew it was a wonderful and challenging-in-the-best-way-possible ride. This past year we added over 75 indie sewing patterns to the shop and welcomed many new designers to our team. We teamed up with Seamly to offer four new sewing patterns, and then I decided to design one of my own, the Lonetree Jacket.

In 2016 we expanded our online fabric store and started offering our fabrics at Fancy Tiger. I opened up and talked about how I don’t actually make any money from Indiesew…yet. Looking back, we’re feeling all the good feelings about how far our little company has come in the last 12 months. And per usual, we’re even more excited about what we have planned for the coming year.

At the end of each year I pull the year's sales data into Excel and start shoving it into pivot tables. I exclude all collection sales and instead only included the individual sales of patterns. It gives me some insight into what trended and what the majority of sewists preferred to sew in 2016. Check out 2015's Bestsellers List here.

This year’s bestselling pattern list was surprising in many ways, yet not in others. There are repeat patterns that are so deserving to be on this list again and will likely show up again in future years. And there are new bestselling patterns that I didn’t expect to see but am super excited about (finally, a pair of jeans made the list!). So let’s kick off the countdown:

P.S. Want to grab your own copy of  one these tried-and-true sewing patterns?

10. Birkin Flares

Birkin Flares by Baste + Gather

If you watch my Instagram stories you likely know how happy I am about the Birkin Flares by Baste + Gather being on this list. These high-waisted, flared leg jeans were featured in our 2016 Spring Collection and I’m not entirely sure I’ve taken them off since. If you have a pair of handmade jeans on the brain, this is a great pattern to start with.

9. Santa Fe Top

Santa Fe Top by Hey June

A 2016 spring pattern release, the Santa Fe Top by Hey June was clearly the pattern we had all been waiting for. This A-line knit tank or short-sleeved top has the option for contrast inset panels. And like all Hey June patterns it has more options than you’ll know what to do with: six for this pattern!

8. Lou Box Top

Lou Box Top by Sew DIY

Another pattern player in our 2016 Spring Collection, the Lou Box Top by Sew DIY is a loose, boxy top with a bias-bound neckline, three hem options, two neckline options, and the option to add a pocket. If you are a beginner sewist, this pattern is perfect for you!

7. Fen

Fen Sewing Pattern by Fancy TigerOh, Fen, how we love your loose yet flattering silhouette. This pattern by Fancy Tiger is a boxy top or dress with a scoop or V-neck and two hem options. We especially love this design sewn in a drapey fabric like Sara did with our sold-out Carnelian Abstract Floral Crepe.

6. Halifax Hoodie

Halifax Hoodie by Hey June

The sewing world needed a cozy hooded sweatshirt pattern and Hey June delivered again! The Halifax Hoodie is a casual pullover or zip-up hooded sweatshirt with five different views. The Halifax will no doubt become your new favorite wardrobe staple.

5. Bethioua

Bethioua by Elle Puls

A repeat from last year (and rightfully so), the Bethioua from Elle Puls is a knit raglan top with a relaxed fit, curved back yoke, shoulder darts, and bat-wing sleeves. This pattern sews up super quickly, making it a great design for gifts or just selfish sewing in multiples.

4. Cheyenne Tunic

Cheyenne Tunic by Hey June

Just like with the Birkin Flares, I’m excited to see another intermediate pattern make the bestsellers list! The Cheyenne Tunic by Hey June is a woven top with two views, optional sleeve tabs, and two sleeve lengths. If you’ve been looking for a go-to button-up shirt pattern, this is it.

3. Inari Tee

Inari Tee Sewing Pattern by Named Clothing

No surprise here: you all have shown so much love for the Inari Tee and Dress by Named Clothing this year. This cocoon-shaped tee or dress has short sleeves and side vents. And the ladies at Named added a copy shop version and size layers to this pattern in 2016!

2. Lane Raglan

Lane Raglan by Hey June

The Lane Raglan remains firmly at #2 on our bestsellers list again this year. This raglan tee has  fitted sleeves, a wide neckband, and the option to add a hood or thumbholes. Plus, Adrianna released an updated version this year with a built-in full bust adjustment. Read more about that and find out how to get the updated pattern here.

1. Ella Top

Ella Top by Liola Patterns

The Ella Top takes the #1 spot once again simply because it is a great summer tank for any level sewist! This casual woven tank top has French seams, bust darts, a back yoke, and back pleat. Don’t forget to check out our popular blog post, How to Sew with Bias Tape, for the perfect finish on this top!

And because we want to share these ten bestselling patterns with you, we’re offering them at 15% off for the next week! Use coupon code BESTSELLER16 at checkout to receive the discount until 10 p.m. MT on Wednesday, January 4.
