A Handmade Holiday: Senna Tote |

I’ve had my eye on a certain tote pattern for quite some time now. When I first heard about the Senna Tote designed by LBG Studio for Willow & Co., I knew I needed it. Before the hundreds of Senna creations started appearing on sewing blogs everywhere, I was certain that this sewing pattern was destined for my cutting table.

When I laid eyes on Caroline’s Senna Tote in person, I actually had to wipe the drool from my mouth. She sewed up her tote in her own Gleeful fabric, and with an awesome leather accent on the straps and bottom of the tote. So I did as I do, and I copied her. I present to you Senna Tote ala Alison Glass Handcrafted Fabric and leather.

The Senna Tote is a modern, functional tote perfect for any woman on the go. This tote can serve as an airline carry on, weekend overnight bag, diaper bag, or beach carryall. It’s spacious inside with divided pockets to keep your valuables where they need to be. A large zipper keeps everything contained, no matter what kind of turbulence you experience.

What’s even better is that this pattern also features two outer pockets, both secured by magnetic snaps. The front outer pocket is ideal for a cell phone while the back pocket can fit a large book or tablet.

This tote is hefty, there’s no doubt about it. The pattern calls for both interfacing and canvas interlining which makes for one sturdy bag, a feature that I totally love. The straps measure just long enough to make this tote a comfortable over-the-shoulder bag.

The Leather Hide Store provided the leather for this bag and I have to say that the folks there are an absolute dream to work with. There are so many colors and weights to choose from that I didn't really know where to start. They did a great job choosing the right weight leather for this project. This leather hide was a similar color and weight to the leather I received.

This was only my second time sewing with leather, and I definitely need a bit more practice. Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the finished product. I recommend using a high quality leather needle. The cheap leather needle I used ended up causing a lot of issues with the bobbin thread bunching up underneath the leather. Not a pretty sight when using contrasting thread.
